Dyson's second robot vacuum product—and its first with integrated vacuum-and-mop functionality—the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai, has attracted considerable attention and sparked heated debates since its unveiling at IFA 2025 and subsequent rollout.

The primary point of contention revolves around the fact that this model is an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) product, produced by the Chinese company Picea Robotics.

If you're familiar with the global robot vacuum market, Picea Robotics is a well-known player. Beyond Dyson, it supplies design, production, and manufacturing services to major brands like Xiaomi, iRobot, Shark, and Anker (Eufy), while also marketing its own brand, "3i."

Some netizens have questioned the way Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai is used for OEM production.

While this Chinese firm excels in innovation, manufacturing, and technology for robot vacuums, Dyson's choice to use ODM production for the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai has divided opinions.

Does relying on an ODM mean a complete lack of innovation or compromised quality?

Ultimately, the focus should shift to the product itself: Does the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai truly deliver on its advertised AI-driven stain detection? And are early user complaints about the app—citing simplistic features, inaccurate mapping, and cumbersome setup—valid?

Despite the criticism, the volume of discussion underscores the high expectations and brand loyalty consumers have for Dyson. As techTongBo, a specialized manufacturer of accessories for robot vacuums and cordless vacuums, we take a closer look at this polarizing new release.

The Base Station Design

Visually, the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai has a substantial build. Its base station includes a cyclonic dust collection cup for effective dust containment, plus separate clean and dirty water tanks. This cup design eliminates the need for disposable dust bags—a approach seen in models like the Ecovacs Deebot X11 OmniCyclone. Benefits include lower long-term consumable costs and better eco-friendliness, though it requires more manual maintenance.

The detergent refill port is located behind the clean water tank. The station provides 60°C hot water for mop washing and 45°C hot air drying for self-cleaning hygiene. Note that no automatic water supply/drainage option is currently available.

Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance

The robot features dual-line LiDAR laser navigation combined with an HD camera for improved mapping and obstacle avoidance. Compared to the 2023 Dyson 360 Vis Nav, the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai shows marked navigation advancements. It retains Dyson's signature optical detection system, emitting green light during operation to identify floor stains in low-light conditions. The model recognizes up to 200 common household items. A key highlight is its fully on-device AI processing—no cloud dependency or image storage—making it appealing for privacy-focused users.

Cleaning Modules and Performance

Pressing the rectangular top cover releases the dust bin, which houses a removable HEPA filter and a fixed primary filter. Filters are consumables; replacement every 2-3 months is recommended to sustain performance.

At the underside, the vacuum-and-mop system stands out. The roller brush uses an integrated rubber-bristle design, with internal comb teeth to minimize hair tangling.

With 18,000Pa suction, user feedback indicates solid daily cleaning on hard floors and carpets. The roller brush lifts during mopping, but the side brush lacks extension or lift—potentially causing minor cross-contamination compared to some flagship competitors.

The mopping system employs a trending roller mop that self-cleans in real time. The roller measures 27cm wide, helping eliminate streaks. It uses 60°C hot water for ongoing mop washing and applies increased pressure with repeated passes on AI-detected stubborn stains. For edges and corners, the roller extends up to 40mm for better coverage.

Intelligent Interactive Experience

In terms of the hardware aspects mentioned above, users have given quite a lot of positive feedback. However, this Dyson model seems to have a somewhat clumsy interaction experience and a rudimentary app with limited features, which makes it hard for people who have already experienced highly intelligent convenience to adapt. For example, some netizens have mentioned that when needing to perform edge cleaning or spot re-cleaning, you can only wait for the robot vacuum to complete the entire cleaning process and return to the base station for self-cleaning before it can restart. Compared to the smooth app experience of popular brands like Roborock and Ecovacs, the user experience still needs improvement. When comparing configurations with models in the same price range on the market, this Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai does not have obvious advantages, especially for software-focused users—it is not the best choice.

Final Thoughts on ODM Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai

The ongoing ODM debates reveal deeper consumer desires for genuine innovation and seamless experiences. In these areas, the current Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai falls short of the premium legacy and high anticipation long associated with the Dyson brand.
